How to: Barbell Bench Lateral Step-up

    1. Stand facing a bench with a barbell resting across your shoulders.
    2. Step up on the bench with one foot, driving through the heel.
    3. Bring the other leg up to meet the planted foot on the bench.
    4. Step back down with the same leg you stepped up with, and alternate legs.

    Common Mistakes

    • Allowing the knee to cave inward while stepping up.
    • Not fully extending the leg on the bench.
    • Using excessive momentum instead of controlled movement.

    Modifications

    • Perform the step-up with a lower platform to reduce difficulty.
    • Use a lighter barbell or no weight at all for beginners.

    Tips

    • Keep your core engaged throughout the movement.
    • Ensure your foot is flat on the bench to maintain stability.
    • Drive through your heel to engage the glutes.
