About this plan

Three sessions a week of gentle yoga aimed at easing tension through the back, combining spinal movement, hip openers and supportive holds.

Day one runs a half sun salutation, cat, cow, child's pose, thread the needle and puppy pose. Day two is standing — mountain pose, swaying palm tree, high lunge, low lunge, a standing forward bend and pyramid. Day three covers mountain pose, tiger pose, bridge, a seated rotation and standing figure four.

The hip work is not a detour. A large share of everyday back tension originates below the back: tight hip flexors tilt the pelvis and load the lumbar spine, and glutes that have gone quiet from sitting leave the lower back extending the hip in their place. The lunges on day two and the figure four on day three address the cause, while cat-cow and thread the needle address the symptom.

Cat and cow together take the spine through its full flexion and extension range with no load at all, which is often the most useful thing available on a day when the back feels locked. Move slowly and let the breath lead.

Bridge on day three is the strengthening piece. A back that aches is frequently one that is doing another muscle's work, and glute strength is the most direct fix available.

A necessary caution: this is a mobility routine, not treatment. Back pain that radiates down a leg, comes with numbness or weakness, follows an injury, or wakes you at night is worth a professional opinion rather than a yoga sequence. Ordinary end-of-day stiffness is what this is for.

Move to the edge of comfort and stop. Force is counterproductive with a back that is already guarding.
